A delegation from KfW and the International Labour Organization (ILO) EIIP Programme recently conducted a field visit to the Baabdath Cluster project, which is funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank. This visit showcased the strong partnership between KfW and ILO, highlighting their shared commitment to supporting road infrastructure improvement in Lebanon.

The Baabdath Cluster project focuses on enhancing road infrastructure through routine maintenance and spot improvement in the Mount Lebanon Governorate. Spanning several municipalities, including Baabdet, Dahr Alsowan, BherSaf, Bekfayya, Mhaydse, Ain Khroube, Hemleya, Abo Meezan, Ain Aash, Der Choumra, Zabbougha, Kfar Oukab, Wadi Alkaram, Baskinta, and Ain al abou, the project is set to be implemented over an eight-month period from March to October 2024.

During the visit, the KfW delegation had the opportunity to witness the significant progress made in infrastructure improvement within the Baabdath Cluster. They observed the construction and rehabilitation of side drains, retaining walls, road cross drainage structures, and the repair of road shoulders. The installation of road safety barriers, road signs, and other essential works, including bioengineering and emergency interventions, were also showcased.

One of the key objectives of the project is to generate employment opportunities for the local workforce. The road maintenance works are carried out by a qualified Lebanese contractor who has received training from ILO on road maintenance using the principles of Local Resource-Based Technology (LRBT) and Decent Work. The project aims to generate a total of 13,026 worker days, emphasizing decent working conditions and promoting fair and transparent recruitment practices. Moreover, the project places a strong emphasis on inclusivity by aiming to achieve a workforce participation of at least 30% for women and 4% for people with disabilities.

The visit by KfW to the ILO EIIP project in the Baabdath Cluster highlights the dedication and collaboration between both organizations in their shared goal of improving road infrastructure in Lebanon. With its focus on routine maintenance and spot improvement, the project holds the promise of enhancing the road network, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to sustainable development.
